Accountable Care Organization (ACO)
Accountable care organizations (ACO) are intended to coordinate the delivery of healthcare services by an affiliated group of healthcare providers serving a minimum number of patient populations. The core principle of accountable care organizations is aligning payments, benefits, and other healthcare policies with measurable, meaningful progress in improving the quality of healthcare delivery while lowering costs.
Three essential characteristics of ACOs are:
- The ability to provide, and manage patients in the continuum of care across different institutional settings.
- The capability of prospectively planning budgets and resource needs; and
- Sufficient size to support comprehensive, valid, and reliable performance measurement.
An important component of an ACO organization is the existence of an open IT infrastructure among the participating facilities that can support the required reporting, measurement and dissemination of clinical outcome and financial metrics data. Consort Systems is prepared to help your organization in assessing and meeting your facility's IT requirements as you form or join an ACO. Our expertise with ACOs stems from the lineage of having provided extensive IT consulting and infrastructure implementation services for hospitals, clinics and providers in support of the formation of integrated delivery networks. |
